In an interview with the Philippine Inquirer, Senator Miriam Santiago said that voters should choose their senators on the basis of the years the candidate spent in college. For Miriam Santiago, good candidates should:

  • have 10 years or more of college and postgraduate studies
  • be a graduate of UP and a master’s degree from abroad

The Philippine Inquirer’s comment on this:

“If Filipino voters had followed Santiago’s prescribed standards to the letter, Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla and Lito Lapid and ousted President Joseph Estrada would not even have made it to the door of the Senate session hall.”
